Joy to the victors! the sons of old Aspen! Joy to the race of the battle and scar! Glory's proud garlands triumphantly grasping; Gen'rous in peace and victorious in war. Honour acquiring, Valour inspiring, Burning resistless, thro' foemen they go: War axes wielding, Broken ranks yielding, Till from the battle proud Rod'ric retiring, Yields in wild rout the fair palm to his foe, (Till from the battle proud Rod'ric retiring,) Yields in wild rout the fair palm to his foe, Till from the battle proud Rod'ric retiring, Yields in wild rout the fair palm to his foe. Now to our home, the proud mansion of Aspen, Bend we gay victors triumphant away; There each fond damsel her gallant youth clasping, Shall wipe from his forehead the stains of the fray. List'ning the prancing Of horses advancing, E'en now on the turrets our maidens appear; Love our hearts warming, Songs the night charming, Round goes the grape in the goblet gay dancing. Love, wine and song our blithe ev'ning shall cheer! (Round goes the grape in the goblet gay dancing.) Love, love, wine and song our blithe ev'ning shall cheer! Round goes the grape in the goblet gay dancing. Love, wine and song our blithe ev'ning shall cheer!
Beautiful, sublime and glorious, Wild, majestic, foaming free, Over time itself victorious, Image of eternity. Sun and moon and stars shine o'er thee, See thy surface ebb and flow; Yet, attempt not to explore thee In thy soundless depths below, Yet, attempt not to explore thee In thy soundless depths below. Sun and moon and stars shine o'er thee, See thy surface ebb and flow; Yet, attempt not to explore thee In thy soundless depths below. Whether morning's splendours steep thee With the rainbow's glowing grace, Tempests rouse or navies sweep thee, 'Tis but for a moment's space. Earth, her valleys and her mountains, Mortal man's behests obey, The unfathomable fountains Scoff his search and scorn his sway, The unfathomable fountains Scoff his search and scorn his sway. Earth, her valleys and her mountains, Mortal man's behests obey, The unfathomable fountains Scoff his search and scorn his sway. Such thou art stupendous ocean! But if overwhelm'd by thee, Can we think without emotion, What must thy Creator be! Such thou art stupendous ocean! But if overwhelm'd by thee, Can we think without emotion, What must thy Creator be! Can we think without emotion, What must thy Creator be!
Never understood why John Field is not more known. He was a really gifted composer !
A really entertaining piece. More of Victor Herbert music should be played on the radio.

tempo a bit slow.
Way back in May 1961 I graduated from 8th grade!we had several songs we learned - one for the boys only, only for the girls only and one for all of us. I hadn’t thought of the, for yesrs and the first line of this one popped into my head this morning as I was getting up! Why? Songs do this all the time for me, but I just had to use the almighty internet to help remember! It was like stepping back many years to hear it again and realize I wasn’t imagining it!
I consulted the oracle: Gervase Hughes "Composers of Operetta" 1962. In 1879, equipped with a new and up-to-the minute Americanised libretto, it found appreciative audiences in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Foot-note: most of the words and music of "the Contrabandista" were subsequently incorporated in "the Chieftan".' I'm sorry we don't have more of this seemingly excellent production on RUclips. Funny lyrics by Burnand of "Cox and Box" fame.
To be fair, this was the opening duet from that Live from Lincoln Center concert. They weren’t quite warmed up yet, and it must’ve been nerve-wracking to know that the tv cameras were pointed down their throats. They improved mightily as the evening progressed, offering duets from Norma and Semiramide, and some spectacular solo arias.
I believe the little skip in the sound at 1:43 is where Joan forgot the words! So she was human and fallible! Lol I’ve seen a RUclips from the Quando Rapito in Estasi and at the end in the applause when she walks over to Richard she gives him a little look as if to say ‘I messed it up! ‘….
A bit of a digression from Auber's rousing march style; a rousing "what" not every 3/4 time is a waltz but thie was plenty rousing, despite the poor sound quality. Must have been taken from an oooold LP recording.
Beautiful upload - thank you
We did this in a stage performance at Southern Miss. about 1953-1954. Great memories.
How is it we have the soundtrack but not the movie
Herbert's manuscript score found its way to the Library of Congress: findingaids.loc.gov/db/search/xq/searchMferDsc04.xq?_id=loc.music.eadmus.mu012013&_start=896&_lines=125&_q=fall%20of%20a%20nation&_displayTerm=fall%20of%20a%20nation&_raw_mfer_q=fall%20of%20a%20nation
How cool to hear this wonderful Rhapsody composed by Rubin Goldmark. Just learned that a great part of this was composed in Woodland Park, CO during his summer visits in 1921 and 1922 according to a report in the San Diego Union newspaper dated Feb. 4, 1923.
It’s a shame this movie is lost. Thomas Dixon, the racist who wrote the novel Griffith’s “Birth Of A Nation” was based on, took his share of that film’s profits and went into the movie business himself, producing, writing, and directing this particular epic. “The Fall Of A Nation” is missing, leaving behind this score and a handful of stills. If those stills are any indication, this is one heck of a propaganda show- For example, when the Invaders land on American soil, they are welcomed by then Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan and a troop of teenage girls in togas ready to toss flower garlands over the shoulders of the invading soldiers, which were made up to look like Prussian Uhlans. That’s the first still. The next shows an unhappy Bryan in his shirtsleeves forced to scrub the Invader’s laundry in wash tub as some of their troops stand by and mock him. Then there ’s a still showing an Invader firing squad executing two Civil War veterans, both dignified old men dressed in Union and Confederate uniforms. The remaining stills show the Invaders towing a gigantic city leveling mortar by sheer manpower, and then an attack on their headquarters, with rampaging American Guerrillas charging up the sweeping curve of a marble staircase. There’s not much else that I can tell you about this movie. It’s lost, and will probably stay that way. However, it wasn’t the first movie to have an original score composed for it. That honor belongs to Camille Saint-Seans who created one for “L’Assassint du duc de Guise” in 1908.
The Saint-Saens score was not to a full-length feature film. 1916 seems to be the watershed year for full-length feature film with newly composed music. Victor Herbert's score is possibly the first of these to be overwhelmingly comprised of original music.
So beautiful.
Wow! How did you come across this recording?

There was an album called “Sweethearts” and on it Soprano Jeanne Ommerle and Baritone Sanford Sylvan sing songs written by Sullivan and accompanied by Gary Wedow on piano. It was a superb album. The title of the DVD, Sweethearts, refers to lyrics written by W.S. Gilbert. I bought it in NYC in 1987 and I play it often.
dude. why does this only have 11 likes. its unfair.
Thank you for adding this song, I have a very old vocal music book which dates back and was intrigued to hear this. Piano and vocal brilliant!!
Ah the good old days….sounds great Bruce! 😎🎶⭐️
Just had the pleasure of leading an orchestra that played this! Wonderful fun!
Song of the day in my own little world.
I wish the NYC of Victor Herbert's time would come back! This piece is so evocative of the type of New York City I miss.
👏
Thanks for posting this marvelous score to a forgotten and lost film!

What is your opinion of this microphone vs the Rode Nt4?
I have a used Rode NT4 and its audio is perceptively cleaner; however its fixed 90 degree XY pickup pattern limits stereo spread and, therefore, is less appropriate for my needs. Both mics tend to be harsh in the upper mid range.
But would you say the Nt4 is 4x better than the AT2022? I plan on recording several choirs for the next few years and am planning on using 4 mics whether they are the NT4's or the AT2022's. A local shop is selling their new AT2022 for $125 likely due to them being discontinued. To me, an NT4 is 4x the price of one AT2022 at the moment. Your thoughts?
@@ChristopherCabello Nope. I would not say the Rode NT4 is 4X better than the AT2022. I think that, given the discount of the AT2022 price, you pretty much made up your mind already. As the harshness/sibilance of either mic may adversely affect the tone of a human voice choir, be prepared to apply EQ, if needed.
Thank you
🔥🔥
I have a music instructor book by Louis Raymond 1887 and the cabinet organ sheet music is one of the very many pages…
I heard woo-oo at the end.
Nice job, ladies! I can hear that Hanne is a good musician, esp. in that triplet in "for o-l-old-love's sake", which you often don't hear.
Hip hip hooray! Buoyant! Cheering! Do you know anyone who will buy (for a modest sum) some sheet music from the period you like? I have no piano and am running out of space!
